Reading Canoe Club has a successful and growing sprint team, catering to paddlers of all levels — from beginners to international athletes representing GB and Paddle UK.
Sprint racing is structured in divisions, from slower (Division D) to elite (Division A), with events over 200m, 500m, and 1000m. Paddlers often begin with regional regattas before progressing to four annual National Regattas at NWSC Nottingham. Participants must be of a required speed to enter the national regattas. These are full weekend events featuring racing across kayak (K1, K2, K4) and canoe classes for men, women, boys, girls, and mixed crews.
Inclusive racing is also strong, with dedicated categories for paddlers with physical disabilities (Paddleability) and Paralympics entrants.
Entries are managed by the Reading Sprint Team Leader. You sign up for available races and indicate any crewboat preferences. Coaches then assign final entries. There is a flat fee for a National Regatta weekend, so you can enter as many races as you want.
Paddlers must arrange their own boat transport to Nottingham for K1 and K2 races; K4s are provided onsite. The club will often take a trailer, but v-bar car racks are an important investment for transporting boats. Accommodation options at Nottingham include local hotels, B&Bs, and a campsite just across the road from the lake that is full of paddlers on race weekends. The team aims to park together at the event to build club spirit.
