25-Jun-12 Wokingham Hasler Sign Up
Looks like this is going to be the last Southern Region race for 2012, as there is no sign of Windsor happening. With the club finish 3rd to Falcon and Banbury at Oxford, the Southern region is nicely level (according to my maths) going into the final event. Therefore it’s all to play for at Wokingham, therefore big Reading entry is required. It will also be great opportunity to practice the Hasler Final course. There has been a slight change to racing timings for Sunday so check out the details on the Wokingham Canoe Club site.

Also worth mentioning that the river frontage has been improved, check out this picture.

Club signup sheet is up at the club or email your entries.

Oxford Hasler Results
Check out the Oxford Hasler results on the MRC website here. No Reading promotions, but plenty of good results.

20-Jun-12 Oxford Hasler & a busy weekend of racing
Busy weekend ahead with Hasler Races at Oxford, Leighton Buzzard, Royal, Exeter and Hereford! As the club qualification is almost in the bag, our focus is now on getting as many paddlers qualified and trying to secure the top spot in our Region. It’s all very tight in the Southern region with four clubs going for that top spot.

After Oxford the four closest qualifying events are as follows.

1-July Wokingham
8-July Richmond
15-July Bradford
25/26Aug Nationals (Norwich) – ok not that close

There is a sign up sheet at the club (deadline is tonight though for sign up), otherwise please contact James Keeble

Due to technical problems we have had to suspend the adverts section of the website. We have had a slight problem with an anonymous update to the database. Normal service will resume soon.

15-Jun-12 Adult Intro Course Session Sat 16th
As things stand we are planning to run the session, but may have to adapt the format according to conditions. If conditions worsen and we have to cancel I will update the website again – so please check back here before starting out for the club.

14-Jun-12 Reading CC Summer Social – Saturday 7th July
It is time again for the Reading CC Annual Summer Social and with the Olympics just around the corner it would be rude not to impose an Olympic theme to the event! We look forward to seeing your novel costume ideas and there will be 2 prizes up for grabs – ‘Best costume’ and ‘Most abstract costume’ for those that want to participate in the Olympic theme but also think outside of the box! With that in mind, get your creative hats on…. There will be a BBQ following on from an afternoon of games on / in the river (the Master of organising the games, Brian Greenham, will be on board to help out again!). Please drop James an e-mail to confirm if you can make the event so we know how many people to expect and cater for James Keeble. There will be a small charge for the BBQ to help cover costs.

14-Jun-12 Junior Regatta – Reading / Wokingham
Due to river conditions the Reading / Wokingham Regatta has be delayed to 15-September

Summer Social
It’s nearly that time of year again… The highly anticipated Reading CC Summer Social has been confirmed as Saturday 7th July. With the Olympics just around the corner, we are looking for some novel costume ideas (no kayaker or rower costumes permitted…) Put the date in your diary now!

“The World’s Oldest Canoe Race”
Royal CC will run the Paddling Challenge 10km race and hold a Post-Olympic Games Party on the evening of Monday August 13. This is the day after the Olympic Games Closing Ceremony. There are reported that a number of ICF, IOC, members will be in attendance plus numerous Olympic competitors attending as well. All are welcome! The race has a downstream start below Kingston bridge, fully buoyed turns and should mark an exciting end to the Olympic Games. If you don’t want to race, just come and join the party. Live music….hog roast…..licensed bar.

See you there and pass on this invite, see entry details here

Hope you’ll all be able to make it. An advance indication of numbers would be really welcome for catering purposes.

12-Jun-12 June Nottingham [Rebecca Jennings]
Congratulations to Max Tod who’s flying visit to Nottingham on Saturday resulted in his promotion to Boy’s B and well done to Stephanie Hutchinson, the first Reading mini sprinter for several years, who battled a fearsome headwind to complete the 500m in a very competitive time.

The other highlight from a generally fairly poorly attended regatta, was Andrew Potterton winning the Boys A 500m by a whisker and congratulations to him on being selected to race in the GB k4 at the Junior European Championships in Portugal in July.

Attention now moves on to the Inter-clubs regatta 21-22 July. We have 6 weeks to plan how we might retain the MacGregor Paddle and make it a hat trick of wins. A sign up sheet will be up shortly so please put the dates in your diary and make it the perfect start to three weeks of Olympic viewing!

07-Jun-12 River very busy this weekend
Please note that Reading Rowing Club are holding Reading Amateur Regatta 2012 on our stretch of the water this coming weekend (Sat 9th & Sun 10th). The river will be very busy with boats racing, warming up & travelling up to the start. This will make things tricky for our less experienced paddlers – who will be better off hopping on the paddle machines. Please all take care and be considerate to those taking part in the event.

03-Jun-12 Longridge Results [Results]
Well done to all those who raced, some excellent individual performance results in the club coming 2nd to Falcon (Oxford). Longridge put on excellent course, but failed to organise the weather correctly. Good job guys.Hopefully this result might put us top of Southern Region table (results to be ratified) with two events to go: Oxford (24-June) and Wokingham (1-July). Not heard any information about Windsor. However, it’s still pretty close so good race attendance is required.

European Qualifiers & World Cup 1 Poznan
While a few dedicated club paddlers made their way down to Southampton Hasler, Andy Daniels represented was representing club and country at the European Qualifiers and first World Cup regatta Poznan in Poland. Andy competed in the 1000m K1 qualifier and 500m K1 World Cup event.

Andy raced well over both distances, just missing out qualifying for the A Final in the 1000m and making 7th the B Final in the 500m. Full results

From the Southern Region Coordinator: Andy Rawson
Additionally can I please ask you to ensure that all paddlers in your club are aware of rule 22b.

Correct Division
Rule 22)b) states that “club coaches are responsible for ensuring the ranking status of their paddlers.” The implication of this, is that the promotion of a paddler of more than one division by the HRM system should be exceptionally rare. It is assumed that club coaches will have a method of doing this, using time trials, comparison to other paddlers of known rank in training and the use of the handicap system on page D1 of the handbook. (Also available on the Marathon Website.)

We have now had two races this season with paddlers being promoted 3 divisions, can you please ensure that you put paddlers out in divisions appropriate to their ability. I really do wish to avoid the MRC having to apply penalties to clubs that persistently put people out in inappropriate divisions.

17-May-12 May Nottingham Report [Rebecca Jennings]
Generally a fairly quiet regatta for Reading with the exception of Jack Foster, who was only in Nottingham for a couple of hours but managed to get promoted to Boys B by winning the 500m event and Dominic Hutchinson who got his second successive promotion, also to Boys B. Well done boys!

Hafsa Kabeer can feel a little hard done by not to get promoted, winning and comming third in the girls D events, but I’m sure she will be on the list after her next regatta.

The JRS boys K4 including Andy Potterton put in a fantastic performance to take the Men and Boys 1000m K4 event, beating more senior ORS boats in the process. As a result, the boat will be going to the International Regatta at Piestany next weekend, on track for a possible European place later in the season.

With numbers attending the regatta well down all round, it would be great if we could start introducing a few new faces in the next few regattas – just chat to an experienced sprinter to find out what it’s all about.

14-May-12 Nottingham Sprints
May Nottingham was a fairly quiet affair in terms of both weather and the racing. A report will follow shortly.

It is already time to sign up for the June Regatta and a sign up sheet is up with deadline of next Monday.

There are also 2 sheets up detailing outstanding sprint fees. Please arrange to pay these ASAP otherwise amounts owing become quite considerable.

7-May-12 Basingstoke
Good turn out at Basingstoke, top result of the day has to be Sam Kirschstein winning the combined division 1/2 K1. Full results avaliable on Basingstoke Canoe Club site. Well done to everyone who raced, we need to keep up the momentum by making sure we have a good turn out Southampton

2-May-12 Elmbridge Assessment
Following has been take from BCU Marathon Racing Committee facebook page
**IMPORTANT NOTICE regarding Elmbridge Assessment race on Sunday 6 May 2012. **

The Assessment Race at Elmbridge on Sunday 6 May will go ahead as planned subject to conditions on the Thames. The MRC has taken this decision after careful consideration and examining alternatives, and bearing in mind that conditions at the World Championships may be equally as testing.

However, as race organiser, Roland Lawler, in agreement with the MRC, has laid down the following conditions for entry.

• All competitors must be ranked in at least marathon division 4.
• All competitors must bring an approved buoyancy aid, which the race organiser may insist on being worn.
• Team Leaders and coaches should be aware of Rule 5b of the marathon rules and their responsibility to paddlers under 16.
• Any paddler with doubts about his/her ability to cope with fast flowing water should not attend.

The conditions will be reassessed over the coming days and updates posted on the marathon website.

Be aware that if conditions worsen the race will be cancelled.

Basingstoke Hasler
Last chance to sign up for Sunday’s Hasler race… James will be down at the club at 6pm to collect the entry sheet. Any more entries after this, please James Keeble. Alternatively you could enter on the day, but save your self some money and help out the race organisers.

27-Apr-12 Elmbridge Assessment [Stuart West]
The River conditions at Elmbridge are not looking good for this weekend, so there is a possibility of the race being cancelled. Please check with the Marathon Website before travelling to the Race.

Contingency for selection of the National Team for Copenhagen are being determined and will be communicated in the event of cancellation.

27-Apr-12 Worcester Hasler & K1 Assessment Race [Stuart West]

26-Apr-12 Basingstoke Hasler – get yourselves signed up! [Race Details]
Sunday 6th May sees the first Hasler race of 2012 in our region and Reading faces tough competition in terms of Hasler qualification from the other clubs around. We’d like to see as many members out racing as possible to maximise our chances of getting to the Hasler Final this year which is being held (nearly) on our doorstep down at Wokingham Canoe Club.

The Reading sign up sheet for the Basingstoke race will be going up at the club shortly so be sure to get your name down on it! Deadline for sign up is Wednesday 2nd May. If you are unable to sign up at the club before this date – please email marathon team leader James Keeble

19-Apr-12 New Junior Course Dates
Next batch of junior course dates are as follows: Mondays (16:00-17:00) 11 June-16 July and Saturdays (11:00-12:00) 2 June-7 July

The full results are now up

Congratulations on the following promotions:
Dom Hutchinson to Boys C
Kate Jayne-Coupe to Girls B
Amy Turner to Womens B

And a really big well done to Reading elite paddler Andy Daniels who is now National Champion at 500m, beating none other than Tim Brabants by a whisker in an exciting final! He was also second in the Men’s 200 final finishing ahead of Liam Heath – no mean feat either. So we wish him every luck in the forthcoming international season and we will be watching with interest as selections unfold – what a pity there can now be no GB men’s K4 at the Olympics!

A more detailed report on the regatta will follow soon. Please remember to sign up for the May regatta as entries have to be in by next Tuesday

Hasler 2012
Hasler Racing
The Hasler season is slowly ramping up! So far we have had Gailey, Cambridge and Calder 1. This weekend is Wey, followed by Worcester who are holding the first marathon assessment of the year.

Don’t forget that the Hasler final is at Wokingham this year 30-Sept and as well as being in the top 4 clubs in region you need to qualify personally too.

13-Apr-12 April Nottingham – Rebecca (Sprint Team Leader)
A very “juicy” programme is now up on the Wey site – my copy is a mass of highlighted races that I am keen to watch! All looks in order regards Reading paddlers but if you have any queries please contact me (details on club notice board.) And please remember – this is Nottingham in April so please bring lots of warm clothing! Let’s hope for a great start to the Sprint season.

15-Mar-12 NOTTINGHAM SPRINT REGATTA – 14th and 15th April
Although it is a little later than usual, this year’s April Sprint Regatta promises some of the best racing seen at Nottingham for quite a while.
It will be the international selection regatta for those hoping to be in the Olympic boats later this year as well as the Open and Senior A National Championships. So, even if you don’t intend to paddle at this regatta, it might well be worth the trip just to spectate!

For those of you who do want to paddle, a signing up sheet will be on the club notice board tonight and MUST be completed by Monday 26th March. Anyone considering racing for the first time, do ask some of the older hands at the club for help with entry/planning or contact Rebecca – contact info on notice board.

The racing fees have gone up this year – £5.25/£10.50/£21.00 K1/K2/K4 with late entries now £6.50/£11.50. This info, and much more is now available in the 2012 Canoe Sprint & Marathon Handbook – available from Marsport at £5.

So, wishing everyone a successful sprint season, and, who knows we may even make it a hat trick of wins in the MacGregor Paddle!

6-Mar-12 Thameside 2 [Final Results]
Last two boats now sorted.

5-Mar-12 Thameside 2 [Updated Results]
Just 462, 854 with no finish times.

4-Mar-12 Thameside 2 [Results]
Well that’s the Thamesides done for another year, a big thank you to all those that raced or helped out on the day. Can’t actually ever remember having snow on T2 before, but there has to be first time for everything and hopefully a last. Prize giving was done by 15:00, understandably attendance was quite low with freezing cold wet weather and long drives ahead for some there is always a temptation to leave early.

Both fast and slow starts were well attended. Full results. Only anomalies are with the following boats 159, 358, 458, 462, 854 who have no finish times – please get in touch and we will try to rectify.

Spare a thought for sweeper bike who was lost in action not long after the start.

Canoe Foundation – ‘positively changing lives through canoeing’ [info]
Many crews raise money for charity by participating in DW; something which is encouraged with the prestigious Pfeiffer Cup, awarded annually to the crew who raise the most money for charity. In conjunction with the Evelina Children’s Hospital, part of St Thomas’s Hospital where the DW finish marquees are located, the Devizes to Westminster Organising Committee select a different charity each year.

For 2012 the Devizes to Westminster Organising Committee are delighted to announce the Canoe Foundation as its ‘Official Charity Partner’.

Donations can be made JustGiving which also allows individuals to collect sponsorship, or PayPal, full links and details of which can be found on the Canoe Foundation website.

Waterside B
Race entry for waterside B is looking to be mega, conditions look excellent. However, the runners would like a little more flow. Given the numbers starting,a last minute flyer (starting last) could be a option.

18-Feb-12 Thameside 1 – Update – Car Parking [Race Details]
The pre-entries for Thameside 1 are particularly high. As a result there will be pressure on the infrastructure at the start and at the finish. Parking will be a particular pinch, so please car share where possible. At the finish there is additional residential street parking highlighted on the attached map.

It is important that everyone parks safely, considerately and legally.

Your professional conduct is key to the future of this race.

Many thanks in advance for your understanding, patience and cooperation.

17-Feb-12 Thameside 1 – Update [PDF]
Everything is looking good for Sunday’s Thameside 1 race Aldermaston to Reading, weather is forecast to be “tropically” 6 degrees – please make sure you dress accordingly. At the last course inspection on Wednesday the canal was about 99% clear of ice, come race day it should be clear. If not you will get couple of extra portages at no extra cost. The infrastructure at the start and the end is very limited and with a high level of entry things will be very tight! Please car share where possible, and when parking make sure you are considerate to our neighbours and other road users. This is important if we are to avoid a restriction on numbers or put future events at risk.

  • Bring your BCU cards
  • Bring your BCU cards
  • Bring your BCU cards (just in case the last two didn’t get through)
  • Bring appropriate clothing for on and off the water
  • Buoyancy Aids are recommended, compulsory for under 16!

Our small lightening team; Fred Kemp winning U10, with Daniel Atkins hot on his tail in 2nd. Not forgetting Mathew Atkins and Stephanie Hutchinson just finishing outside of the medals!

13-Sept-11 National Sprint Championships September 2011
Having sorted last year’s weed problem, there was not a lot the Nottingham Organisers could do about the strong cross winds (the end of Hurricane Katia apparently.) Reading paddlers largely coped well with the conditions but there were some results that were definitely wind affected with conditions favouring lower lane numbers.

Despite conditions, Reading paddlers managed an excellent haul of 22 medals of all colours. Following similar success in the National Marathon Championships last month, (Amber Owen U16 K2 National champion and Imogen Collins Silver medallist in U18 K2,)the girls again got Gold medals in K2, Imogen in U18 200 and 1000m with her partner Emily Illinesi of Elmbridge and Amber with Bethan Owen of Addlestone in the u16 500m event. In addition to this, Amber got gold medals in the u16 k4 events and silver in hotly contested U16 1000K2 and 500k1. Her set was completed with a bronze in the 1000mk1. Imogen meanwhile also got silver medals in the 500 and 200 U18 K1 and K2 and K4 events bringing her haul to 7 medals with a bronze in the 1000m K1.

In the boys events, Andy Potterton raced hard to a bronze medal in the u18 500 K1 and also got bronzes with partner Tony Kirscshstein in the 200, 500 and 1000 U18 K2 events – good luck to these two and Amber in the Olympic Hopes Regatta in Poland at the weekend. Sam Kirschstein finishes our list of medallists with 2 bronze medals in the u16 1000 and 5000m K4 events.

Mention should also be made of the fact that our other girls U18 paddlers, Emily Chalk, Sophie Collins, Amy Dillon and Amy Turner all performed well making several finals in their various events. Thanks also to our loyal senior paddlers, James, Pip , Alo, Tony, Paul and Craig who also competed in their age or class events. On this note, we only had 2 u16 paddlers competing at this regatta and no u14s – hopefully next season will see some new young paddlers coming up to the Nottingham Regattas. This will be particularly important if we have any chance of retaining the Macgregor Paddle, which we were presented with at this event – see photo. Well done everyone for a great sprint season – will be chasing you now for fees!

08-Sept-11 National Sprint Championships
A small (but very select!) team of Reading paddlers are travelling to Nottingham for the last time this year to take part in the National Sprint Championships – good luck to everyone taking part – hopefully the weather won’t be as bad as the forecast currently predicts but at least weed shouldn’t be a major problem this year.

Reading will be presented with the MacGregor Paddle on Sunday at 13.00 – so can all paddlers and supporters attend the presentation.

AE Photos have contacted me to say that they will be at the Regatta and if you would like photos of you or your loved ones paddling, please contact 07796 371215 / email

31-Aug-11 A Challenge [Catherine Drummond]
Some of you are already aware that John and I are aiming to complete the Henley Challenge Ironman on the 18th September this year. Yes, apologies, the event is going to mean some roads are going to be closed in the area, sorry J. I suggest cycling or walking.John & I decided to enter the event whilst my dad was still fighting Guillian Barré to bring much needed awareness and funding to research the virus.

With my dad passing away this May, it only makes our efforts all that more important and personal. My father was a true gentleman, sports lover and dedicated father. He spent large parts of his time to coaching & umpiring cricket and hockey. He always encouraged and supported me in all my crazy adventures and it is fitting that our biggest test is dedicated to him.

We are raising funds for both the UK and SA Guillian Barré charities. Here is a link to our just giving page

Please feel free to forward this email to friends and family as you so wish.
Just to give you a little insight into how far the IronMan challenge is (it makes me quiver each time I think about it).

The swim is 3.8km (2.4miles) equivalent to 190 lengths in a 20m pool
The cycle is 180km (112miles) equivalent to walking from Stoke Row to Nottingham (which according to Google Maps takes 1 day and 13 hours)
The run is a full marathon 42.2km (26miles).

The race starts at the Henley Management College. The swim is a loop upstream along the regatta course returning to the College for the transition to bike.

The bike route passes through Nettlebed, Highmoor, Stoke Row, Peppard, Cane End, Checkendon, Ipsden, Stonor, Christmas Common.

The run is a four lap route from Henley Bridge to the Flower Pot and then back along the Thames Path finishing at Phyllis Court.

You can take a look at the route and more details of the race on:

25-Aug-11 Where has all the water gone ?
The BBC has the answer…

24-Aug-11 Nationals [Stuart West]
Please Note: Due to potential issues with “Travellers” in the vicinity of the racecourse the access to the camping and Parking areas will be a lot tighter than in the past. If you are going to be arriving late on Friday or Saturday evenings (after approx. 8pm) please make sure you have the contact number 07818 428743 as if the gate is closed you will need to call it to be let in.

I hope that everyone will be understanding and patient, as the expense of evicting any “travellers” that gain access to the racecourse during our event have to be borne by the canoe club.

The presence of the travellers in the area also means that campers should be vigilant, do not leave valuables unattended in tents or on show in cars..If you see anything suspicious please inform a marshal asap.

11-Aug-11 Liffey 2011 – Postponed – 8-Oct-2011
Please note the change of date for the 2011 Liffey Descent due to lack of water to guarentee a flood for the race.
Please see the web page for additional detail.
All other arrangements are expected to be as previous Liffey Descents.
A full flood is expected for the new race date (8th Oct 2011).
If you have any further queries please contact the ICU office
Apologies for any inconenience caused.

Liffey Descent 2011 postponed until 8th October due to lack of water.

As you are aware the annual Liffey Descent has traditionally been held in early September. It had been intended to run the 2011 Liffey Descent on Saturday 10th September next.

The main attraction of the Liffey Descent over the years has been that it is a ‘big water’ event. The flood for the event is provided by the Electricity Supply Board through the release of water from its upstream reservoirs. The ESB has however recently advised the Irish Canoe Union that reservoir levels are currently at a 35 year low and that having regard to long range weather forecasts and its own water demand forecasts it will not be in a position to release water to facilitate this year’s event in September. It has indicated that it will be in be better placed in October to facilitate a release sufficient for the ICU to run a satisfactory event.

As a consequence this has left the ICU with a difficult decision – to run the event on 10th September as originally planned but without a flood or to postpone it until early October when there will be a greater possibility of the traditional Liffey Descent flood.

Having considered the matter in great detail and having taken into consideration as many factors as possible including, but not limited to, matters such as potential clashes with other events, mean temperatures in early October and the likely impact of future Liffey Descents in the event of running a ‘dry’ race, the event Organising Committee has arrived at the conclusion that, on balance, the most appropriate course of action is to postpone this year’s Liffey Descent until Saturday the 8th of October.

The ICU regrets that it has been necessary to take this course of action and is conscious that this may not be popular in all quarters. It would however remind canoeists that the release of water is a matter completely outside the control of the Irish Canoe Union and is one solely for the ESB. It is considered that the running of the race in the absence of the excitement generated by a flood would detract from its value as the premier Irish canoeing event.

The postponement of the Liffey Descent, although regrettable, is considered to be in the best interests of the broader Irish canoeing community and the decision to postpone has been taken in this context.

The Sella Descent draws over a thousand boats from all over the world every year, and there is always a good contingent of paddlers from British clubs. More than just a race, this is an integral part of a week long festival of canoeing and partying. Take a look here for more information.

3-Aug-11 Sad News [Tonbridhe Canoe Club]
We at Tonbridge Canoe Club would like to express our deepest sadness at the loss

We are sure you will understand that under the circumstances we have decided to
cancel the Tonbridge Hasler Marathon due to take place this weekend 7th August.

21-Jul-11 Reading 5km
This Saturday we are hosting two 5km races, the first in K1 and second in K4 – see details. There is also a sign up sheet on the marathon board at the club so get your name down if you can make this weekend’s race.

Wokingham Hasler
Sunday is Wokingham Hasler (also referred to as Thames Valley Hasler). A good stretch of water and just down the road from our club so nice and local!
Looks like it will be an out and back race format. The sign up sheet is up and deadline for sign up is TONIGHT – THURSDAY! Please fill in the sheet on the marathon board at the club. Let’s try to get as many people out as possible and (maybe!) outnumber Banbury this time round!
We are also going to have a team picture before the start of the long course 12:00 – come and find the club flag.

Summer Social
The summer social was excellent – lots of fun had by all. Amusing games organised by Brian on the river made for a fun afternoon followed by a BBQ and a few drinks in the evening. Good effort on the costumes for those that took part in the fancy dress! Thanks to James, Amelia and Brian for organising.

Well done to all those who made it to Southampton, results are now up

Thames Valley Circuit (Wokingham Hasler)
Just downstream of us, it would be great if we can have all of you taking part. Mark King is trying to get the adult beginners to do the same. It would be a good idea to sign up to the race and book a club boat at the same time. The club boats are normally booked on a first come first served basis, so if you leave it to the last moment there may be no boats left. Martin Watson has indicated he is willing to tow the club trailer to the venue so this will help with boat transportation. You can do singles or doubles.

Macgregor Paddle – Final thoughts
Winning this for a second year running is an incredible achievement which we had planned for but not totally expected and proves that last year was no fluke! The trophy will be presented at The Sprint National at Nottingham in September. It would be great if as many team members as possible could be there for the competition and photo.

For those of you who like stats, the final breakdown of the results are here

Although some winning and other excellent performances appear not to have scored points, they will have been vital in ensuring that our competitors didn’t gain points. Also bearing in mind that our winning margin was only 3 points, EVERY paddler who raced contributed to our victory.

Finally, hopefully people who were unable to attend this year will be inspired by the result to come up to the Macgregor Paddle 2012 to help make it three in a row!

04-Jul-11 Interclubs (Macgregor Paddle) Regatta – July 2011 [Rebecca Jennings]
What a weekend – what a team! When we left Nottingham at 16.30, Reading and Wey were level in 1st place, on 456 points; a position that exceeded our expectations and, whatever happens when the final racing points are added and penalties deducted, everyone involved can be really proud of their efforts and achievements.

Thanks go out to all the paddlers, from Jack and Max who finalled when they were the only Reading paddlers out of 64 in Boys D, to Imogen, Amber, Andy and Tony in Girls and Boys A, Hayley in Womans C and Emilly in Girls D who won all their finals in K1 and K2. Special mention also to our intreppid Canoe paddlers, Brian, Paul T, Craig and Alo who won us very valuable points in C4 and Alo also in C1. Other heroic performances include the mums’ K4 who were more competitive than ever before, Alistair who literally jumped in to a vet’s K4 with minutes to spare and Rebecca and Frankie who made it down the 1000m in their debut event.

Special thanks also to all the parents and supporters of the team who made sure the paddlers were in the right place at the right time and were well fed and watered and sun creamed ( yes, conditions were perfect – sun and light winds!) and personal thanks to Carla and Graeme, who were invaluable in keeping the scores, and the paddlers, on the ball!

29-Jun-11 Southampton Hasler 2011 [Andy Rawson- Southern Region Rep][Race Details]
Over the last 3 seasons I have been unhappy with the promotions coming out of the Southampton race especially on the 8 mile course.Having analysed the last five seasons compared to other “estuary races” the results appear to have a very high degree of fluctuation compared to other similar events.

This has resulted in quite a few “questionable promotions” and complaints from the clubs.

The only real difference between Southampton and the other estuary races is the numbers involved at Southampton which results in separate rather than amalgamated starts.

I have asked the race organiser at Southampton not to run separate starts on the 8 mile course in order to prove that it is the separate starts that cause the issue.

I ask the clubs to support this one off change so I can get the evidence to prove that we either need to change the format for Southampton, or we make it an event at which there are no automatic promotions. Can you please advise your paddlers of this change for this year and please encourage them to still attend.

Please feed any comments back to myself post the event

Thank you in advance your help with this

More MRC News
The committee is still concerned about the number of paddlers being entered into Division 9 for their first race, without reference to their ability or speed. There have been several instances this year of paddlers being promoted straight to division 6 or even 5, which would suggest that the Team Leaders or Coaches have had no input into the entry.

Roland Lawler has requested that he be able to suggest demotions for paddlers clearly struggling in their current division. To this effect, a note ‘?d’ will appear in the website results against the names of those that Roland will be happy to demote if the paddler or coach requests. Please note that this will not be done automatically but only after a formal request is received.

The committee recommends that there be one point of contact between Regional Marathon Advisers and each club so that information can be forwarded more readily. Can you please ensure that the clubs in your region are made aware of the points above. I have a list of emails for apparent Team Leaders of clubs, but usually find that a great number of them are returned unsent, so would rather disseminate the information via the regions.

6-Jun-2011 River Closure
Reading Rowing regatta this weekend, with river closure in place both days. Will check and confirm times shortly. See for more information.

Hasler Racing
With the river closed this weekend, it might be worth getting down to Royal’s Hasler race. But don’t forget Oxford the following weekend – attendance is mandatory if the club is going to qualify for the Hasler finals. The win at Reading was handy, but is certainly not sufficient. Especially as we still have Southampton to come, which the most of the club has strange aversion to. This is a shame as the course has been shortened, so it’s not actually any different to racing on the river and oddly the weather has always been kind to Southampton.

Please remember that the Oxford Hasler is next weekend (Sunday 19th June). I believe the race is down as a K2 race in the calendar however this is not the case and div 1 – 3 will have to race K1. Sign up sheet will be going up shortly so please keep an eye out for this.
