The first Reading K4 Race of this year will be held on Sunday 10th June 2018. (No Entry on the Day.)
Sunday 1st October saw Reading Canoe Club’s second K4 day of the year. Whereas the April one had been surprisingly quiet, less than ten boats, October’s set a record – a total of 40 boats. That was from 10 different clubs, some travelling from as far as Cambridge. What love for K4 racing!
Although Reading Canoe Club didn’t have so many of our boats on the podium, we did enter nine boats all together across the six start lines. It was great to see so many junior boats out, going at it with gusto and getting that feel of synchronicity!
Even the weather was fine. Thanks so much Brian – we all had a great racing day. Thanks, too, to our gardening chefs, Catherine and Dominique, who made the delicious pumpkin soup from that crazy-sized pumpkin!
The weather was kind and the enthusiasm high as teams gathered from Reading, Wokingham, Pangbourne, Southampton, Weybridge and Addlestone for the first K4 event of the year.
A change to the norm …
With a smaller field than usual entering the K4 race, the Club had decided to make it a single 5km handicap race, followed by 200m sprints. The teams were ranked according to their combined division for the handicap 5km race and two rockets were first to start.
Fastest boat on the water with a whizzy 19:10 mins was Reading’s Under 23 Div 3 boat of Imogen Collins, Jim New, Connor Macnab and Alex Sheppy. Not far behind were Southampton/Wey with a 19:50. While 3rd place went to Reading Vets Nik Topham, Yan Rasiborski, Kevin Smith and a mystery paddler.
200 metre sprints
After the 5km race, heats were drawn up for the 200-metre sprint. The 2 fastest from each heat went through to the semi finals, and the winners of these made the finals. There was a consolation final for the ‘losers’ too, so everyone got a chance to race more than once. It was all lots of fun, with the winning cup going to the speedy Reading crew again.
It was a great morning for all ages and abilities. Thanks to everyone who took part, the visiting teams for making it up to Reading and to the organisers. Here’s to the next one in October!!
2nd October saw RCC’s 2nd K4 Race Day of 2016 take place – one of the most enjoyable events of the year. As has become tradition, it was a beautiful blue-sky day, minimal wind, and with 28 crews entered from 8 clubs, we were set for an exciting morning of racing.
Reading was proud to put out 9 mixed crews across the four starts (A/B, C1, C2 and D/hody), only beaten by a very enthusiastic Wey, who managed 10. Top wins were achieved by RCC with 2nd in the C1 race, 2nd and 3rd in C2, 2nd in the B race, and a tremendous 1st and 3rd from our hody paddlers. Well done all. It was a really fun day.
Here are the pre-entries so far for the Reading K4 races this weekend. More entries are expected in the next few days.
